” Shirking $30,000 in medical fees for a traditional prosthetic hand, videographer Paul McCarthy built a multi-colored “Robohand” for his twelve-year-old son using a friend’s 3-D printer. McCarthy says he spent, “Five, maybe, ten bucks.”
The boy, 12-year-old Leon McCarthy, was born without fingers on his left hand. Once he turned ten, Paul started searching for an inexpensive and functional prosthetic alternative.
What he found changed his son’s life. AYouTube video by Washington-based special effects artist and puppeteer, Ivan Owen, shows the results of the artist’s collaborative effort to build a Robohand for a disabled boy in South Africa. Like McCarthy, Owen was not an engineer, computer scientist, or doctor. However, he was passionate about helping to develop affordable, DIY prosthetics. In an interview with CBS News, Owen said:
I’ve always had this vision of people being able to build their own prosthetic device at home.
To help him accomplish this goal, MakerBot, a firm that produces 3-D printing equipment, offered Owen and his South African design partner, Richard Van As, free printers. From there, Owen and Van As honed the Robohand and posted the design and instructions for free download on Thingiverse, a website for sharing digital designs.”

” A school in California has hired Geo Listening Company to begin tracking their 13,000 students through social media. Glendale Unified School District, in Los Angeles County, claims this is to crack down on law-breaking, bullying, and other harmful activities. At the price of $40,000 tax payer dollars they better be catching some serious bullies.
“All of the individual posts we monitor on social media networks are already made public by the students themselves. Therefore, no privacy is violated,” Geo Listening Company said, adding it does not “monitor email, SMS, MMS, phone calls, voicemails or unlock any privacy setting of a social network user.”
It claims it can track “bullying, cyber-bullying, despair, hate, harm, crime, vandalism, substance abuse, truancy” and much more, using popular services like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Picasa, Vine, Flickr, Ask.fm, YouTube, Google+ or anywhere else where people share information voluntarily.”
” YouTube is adding a feature to its mobile app in November that will let users add videos to their handsets to watch for a short period, even when they are unable to get an Internet connection.
Exactly how long the “short period” will be is not clear yet, but YouTube hints that it could be as long as your journey to work in the morning, saying: “Your fans’ ability to enjoy your videos no longer has to be interrupted by something as commonplace as a morning commute.” “
” Two of the members of the American rock group Bloodhound Gang have been named as suspects in Russia for “inciting hatred.”
In July, the group’s bassist Jared Hasselhoff shoved the country’s flag into his underpants during a gig in the Ukraine. That act got him barred from a music festival in Russia.
The incident took place when the band, famous for its sexually explicit songs and on-stage antics, played a concert in Ukraine. On a video, posted on YouTube, Hasselhoff is seen pushing the Russian white-blue-red tricolour into the front of his pants and then pulling it out of the back.
“Don’t tell Putin!” he said to the applause of the audience in the city of Odessa.”
” A video of a furious mother punching a skater in the face after he knocked over her young son at a park has sparked intense debate over whether the woman was right to attack the skater who hurt her child.
A California skate boarder was performing tricks for a skating video called Warm Gravy when he plowed into a small child who crossed his path.
The little boy immediately starts crying. When the skater gets to his feet, he asks the boy, ‘Are you alright, man?’ “
” When I watched this the first time, I was hypnotized and a teary mess. The second and third times, things didn’t change. Their story is amazing. Watch it. Share it. Enjoy the wondrous and happy ending. And remember not to take things for granted. If you aren’t hooked by 1:30, you are a stronger person than I am.”
” *WARNING: All of the videos in this story contain graphic, profane, and offensive language.*
The chief of police in Gilberton Borough, Pennsylvania (population 834), is under fire after posting a series of profanity-laced videos that insult liberals, Secretary of State John Kerry and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. And he is in no way apologetic for any of them.”
” The video that sparked an investigation into Chief Kessler is a brief one but manages to pack in plenty of comments that many have found offensive. In the clip, Kesseler drops the f-word numerous times and uses the derogatory term “libtards” while wearing a t-shirt with an offensive comment on it:
In another video, Chief Kessler (in uniform) is teaching a class on pistol safety. He uses a target with a clown image on it and refers to the image as “Nancy Pelosi with her gavel”:
” According to staff at the Coalition Drum Shop in La Crosse, Wisconsin, a mysterious elderly woman who came to the shop stunned them with an ace performance on a drum set.”
” Consumerist reports that staff at the store said they do not who the elderly woman was or where she learned to play the drum. But they managed to record two videos of her performance that fellow Rolling Stones seniors must be looking at for their next recruitment.”

” Three police officers have been pulled from street duty for their safety in Southern California after a video of them shooting a dog dead as they arrested its owner hit the internet.
A cellphone video that had more than 3.7 million views on YouTube by Thursday morning shows the dog, named Max, being shot after scrambling out of a car’s back seat through a window and lunging at officers who had handcuffed its master.
The dog’s owner Leon Rosby had been filming a police raid in Hawthrone California, and was arrested for alleged obstruction of justice.”
” A video showing a Hawthorne police officer fatally shooting a dog is drawing outrage on the Internet, and its owner claims he was targeted because of pending claims against the department.
The shooting Sunday occurred after a standoff between police and armed robbery suspects near the intersection of 137th Street and Jefferson Avenue.
Officers handcuffed bystander Leon Rosby, 52, after he walked close to the scene with an 80-pound Rottweiler on a “long leash-line,” creating “an increasingly dangerous situation,” the Hawthorne Police Department said in statement.
The 2-year-old Rottweiler, named Max, whom Rosby had put in his car before being cuffed, then jumped out of the vehicle. Officers tried to grab the dog’s leash and then opened fire, “fearing that the attacking Rottweiler would imminently bite the officer(s),” according to the department statement.
The officers fired four shots, said Michael Gulden, an attorney for Rosby. Video footage shot by a witness and posted on YouTube shows the dog writhing on the pavement as onlookers shriek. “
” The New York Daily News has pointed to this sad but fascinating video of a dog meticulously burying the body of a dead puppy. Using its snout, the dog pushes sand over the lifeless body of the puppy in an apparent act of mourning.”
” The program, code-named PRISM, has not been made public until now. It may be the first of its kind. The NSA prides itself on stealing secrets and breaking codes, and it is accustomed to corporate partnerships that help it divert data traffic or sidestep barriers. But there has never been a Google or Facebook before, and it is unlikely that there are richer troves of valuable intelligence than the ones in Silicon Valley.
Equally unusual is the way the NSA extracts what it wants, according to the document: “Collection directly from the servers of these U.S. Service Providers: Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, Apple.”
London’s Guardian newspaper reported Friday that GCHQ, Britain’s equivalent of the NSA, also has been secretly gathering intelligence from the same internet companies through an operation set up by the NSA.
According to documents obtained by The Guardian, PRISM would appear to allow GCHQ to circumvent the formal legal process required in Britain to seek personal material such as emails, photos and videos from an internet company based outside of the country.”
Despite the spate of corporate denials it would appear that they are all willing participants … shame .
” In exchange for immunity from lawsuits, companies such as Yahoo and AOL are obliged to accept a “directive” from the attorney general and the director of national intelligence to open their servers to the FBI’s Data Intercept Technology Unit, which handles liaison to U.S. companies from the NSA. In 2008, Congress gave the Justice Department authority for a secret order from the Foreign Surveillance Intelligence Court to compel a reluctant company “to comply.”
In practice, there is room for a company to maneuver, delay or resist. When a clandestine intelligence program meets a highly regulated industry, said a lawyer with experience in bridging the gaps, neither side wants to risk a public fight. The engineering problems are so immense, in systems of such complexity and frequent change, that the FBI and NSA would be hard pressed to build in back doors without active help from each company.“
The money quote …
“As it is written, there is nothing to prohibit the intelligence community from searching through a pile of communications, which may have been incidentally or accidentally been collected without a warrant, to deliberately search for the phone calls or e-mails of specific Americans,” Udall said.
