Senate Judiciary Committee Votes To Confirm Loretta Lynch As AG — Thanks To Three Republicans

 

 

 

 

 

” Because the GOP has a majority in the Senate, it also has a majority on all Senate committees — 12 to 9 in the case of the Judiciary Committee. But since Lynch’s confirmation has become a referendum on executive amnesty and the GOP is riddled with amnesty shills, there was no doubt that a few would cross over and vote with Democrats today to send her through to a floor vote of the entire Senate.

  The three defectors: Jeff Flake and Lindsey Graham, both members of the Senate’s Gang of Eight on immigration, and Orrin Hatch, who sold himself as Mr. Conservative to Utah tea partiers in 2012 in order to avoid being primaried.

  Democrats expressed dismay that Ms. Lynch, whose record they praised repeatedly, encountered so much opposition, especially since Republicans had cited virtually nothing objectionable in her background.

“ If anyone deserves a unanimous vote, she does,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.).

  The committee vote means Ms. Lynch will likely be considered by the full Senate in the coming weeks. There, she will need to win the support of at least four Republicans to be confirmed, assuming all of the chamber’s 46 Democrats vote for her.”

House Republicans Hit Wall On Immigration Reform

 

 

” House Republican leaders are facing a wave of opposition from their rank and file on a plan to move ahead with immigration reform, prompted in part by lack of trust in the Obama administration, threatening chances of legislation passing in 2014.

  Many House Republicans left their annual issues retreat in Cambridge, Md., feeling uncertain about the GOP leadership’s new “Standards for Immigration Reform” blueprint, which would boostborder security, expand immigration and provide legal status to those living here illegally.

  Even those who back the plan say they don’t want to try to implement it right now.

“ There is a total lack of trust on the Obama administration,” Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, said. “It’s a very real factor.”

  The Republican plan calls for tackling reform in smaller pieces of legislation — addressing border security first — rather than the comprehensive bill passed by the Democratic Senate.”

Background-Check Deal Said Getting Close

 

 

 

 

” A bipartisan deal to expand gun-purchase background checks looks promising, U.S. Senate aides said, as the White House began a strong gun-control push Monday.

The improving bipartisan prospects stem from a measure being developed by Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa., the aides told The Washington Post.

The measure calls for background checks for all gun purchases except for those between close family members and some hunters, the aides said, adding the caveat addressed concerns of some conservatives.

He has been negotiating with Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Mark Kirk, R-Ill., and Tom Coburn, R-Okla., over the deal’s details, but talks were stalled amid Coburn’s opposition to requiring gun owners to keep records of private gun sales — a point Schumer insisted on.”
