Bill Gates’ Tech Worker Fantasy

” Business executives and politicians endlessly complain that there is a “shortage” of qualified Americans and that the U.S. must admit more high-skilled guest workers to fill jobs in STEM fields: science, technology, engineering and math. This claim is echoed by everyone from President Obama and Rupert Murdoch to Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates.

Yet within the past month, two odd things occurred: Census reported that only one in four STEM degree holders is in a STEM job, and Microsoft announced plans to downsize its workforce by 18,000 jobs. Even so, the House is considering legislation that, like the Senate immigration bill before it, would increase to unprecedented levels the supply of high-skill guest workers and automatic green cards to foreign STEM students.

As longtime researchers of the STEM workforce and immigration who have separately done in-depth analyses on these issues, and having no self-interest in the outcomes of the legislative debate, we feel compelled to report that none of us has been able to find any credible evidence to support the IT industry’s assertions of labor shortages.”

Mark Zuckerberg’s Call To Obama Was Not About Privacy

” Mark Zuckerberg is not happy with the way the American government conducts surveillance on the Internet, so much so that he called President Obama to complain about it and then wrote a post Thursday on Facebook to vent his frustration. “The U.S. government should be the champion for the internet, not a threat,” he said.

Some observers have pointed out that Mr. Zuckerberg’s comments are ironic because Facebook, the company he co-founded and runs, has a spotty record when it comes to protecting the privacy of its users. The company has been criticized for changing its privacy policy in ways that make it harder for users to control who can see the information that they have posted to the social network.

But it is worth noting that Mr. Zuckerberg never mentions the word “privacy” in his post.”

All appearances to the contrary , Zuckerberg’s concerns lie with profit not privacy . The man cares not a whit for your privacy or anyone else’s . He only cares that the NSA surveillance has unmasked exactly how co-operative the web giants have been with the Feds and so is interfering with their bottom lines . Typical hypocrisy .

” In other words, Mr. Zuckerberg has not really transformed into an advocate for greater privacy. He is just protecting the interests of his company.”

Facebook Mulling Policy Changes On Gun-Themed Pages

” Facebook may announce company policy changes for gun-related pages in the coming weeks, VentureBeat has learned.

The social network has been under pressure from the powerful Mayors Against Illegal Guns and the Moms Demand Action civic group to ban gun-themed fan pages on the site.

The two advocacy groups recently joined forces to pressure what they say is their stated objective of seeing “Facebook get out of the gun business.” Mayors Against Illegal Guns was co-founder by former NYC three-term mayor and billionaire Michael Bloomberg along with Boston’s then-mayor Thomas Menino in 2006. Mayors of more than 1,100 U.S. cities belong to the organization.

A Moms Demand Action petition on Change.org to prohibit gun sales on Facebook and Facebook-owned Instagram has over 94,000 signatures. Comedian Sarah Silverman recently tweeted about the campaign, which is getting massive exposure through U.S. media outlets.

The petition is addressed to Instagram chief executive Kevin Systrom and Facebook co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg:

To:
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO
Kevin Systrom, Instagram CEO
Your platforms unfortunately allow users to buy, sell, and trade firearms without requiring criminal background checks.Other online platforms including Craigslist, eBay, and Google+ have already prohibited these sales.I ask that you put an end to this completely unregulated social media gun show and prohibit gun sales from your platforms immediately.

Sincerely,
[Your name] “

Since nothing is actually bought or sold through Facebook how will they prevent people from using their website to conduct illegal activities ? The obvious answer would be to ban all references to guns on the pages . If that is in fact their chosen method to appease the Nanny Bloombergs among us then we are looking at a ban on gun-related pages which from our point of view will result in an end to our association with the social media giant .

Zuckerberg Group Distributes Memo On ‘The Shocking Extremism Behind Anti-Immigrant Groups’

” Yesterday, it was reported that Sen. Jeff Sessions distributed a 30-page memo at the Republican retreat in Maryland, urging his colleagues not to “surrender” by backing immigration reform.

Now comes word that the Mark Zuckerberg co-founded group FWD.us is distributing their own pro-immigration reform memo to Members of Congress.

What makes it interesting, to me, at least, is that the memo (which is titled, “Summary Background Memo on Broad Support for Immigration Reform”) also includes a section (starting on page 18) on ‘The Shocking Extremism Behind Anti-Immigrant Groups.’

Facebook Founder Called Trusting Users Dumb F*cks

” Loveable Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg called his first few thousand users “dumb fucks” for trusting him with their data, published IM transcripts show. Facebook hasn’t disputed the authenticity of the transcript.

Zuckerberg was chatting with an unnamed friend, apparently in early 2004. Business Insider, which has a series of quite juicy anecdotes about Facebook’s early days, takes the credit for this one.

The exchange apparently ran like this:

Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard

Zuck: Just ask.

Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS

[Redacted Friend’s Name]: What? How’d you manage that one?

Zuck: People just submitted it.

Zuck: I don’t know why.

Zuck: They “trust me”

Zuck: Dumb fucks

The founder was then 19, and he may have been joking. But humour tells you a lot. Some might say that this exchange shows Zuckerberg was not particularly aware of the trust issue in all its depth and complexity.”

The PRISM Spin War Has Begun

” On the heels of media reports that the NSA has gained access to the servers of nine leading tech companies — enabling the spy agency to examine emails, video, photographs, and other digital communications — Google has issued a strongly worded statement denying that the company granted the government “direct access” to its servers. That statement goes so far as to say that the company hasn’t even heard of “a program called PRISM until yesterday.”

At first glance, Google’s statement is difficult to believe. Senior intelligence officials have confirmed the program’s existence, and Google’s logo is prominently listed on internal NSA documents describing participating companies. But Google may be engaging in a far more subtle public relations strategy than outright denial.

Google’s statement hinges on three key points: that it did not provide the government with “direct access” to its servers, that it did not set up a “back door” for the NSA, and that it provides “user data to governments only in accordance with the law.” “

Facebook Boss Mark Zuckerberg Launches New Immigration Lobby Group

” The billionaire founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, has launched a new initiative to push for immigration reform, describing America’s current system as “unfit for today’s world.”

The group, called FWD.us, (pronounced Forward US), is backed by other Silicon Valley leaders including Google chairman Eric Schmidt, Yahoo boss Marissa Mayer and Reid Hoffman, the billionaire co-founder of Linkedin.

“We have a strange immigration policy for a nation of immigrants. And it’s a policy unfit for today’s world,” Zuckerberg wrote in an editorial for The Washington Post to launch the lobby group.

Zuckerberg said FWD.us would push for:

● Comprehensive immigration reform that begins with effective border security, allows a path to citizenship and lets us attract the most talented and hardest-working people, no matter where they were born.

● Higher standards and accountability in schools, support for good teachers and a much greater focus on learning about science, technology, engineering and math.

Investment in breakthrough discoveries in scientific research and assurance that the benefits of the inventions belong to the public and not just to the few.

This year demand for skilled-worker visas, known as H-1Bs, outstripped the entire year’s supply in the first week that companies were allowed to file applications.”

Dustin Moskovitz, the world’s youngest billionaire.

” There are 1,426 billionaires in the world this year. They are the wealthiest of the wealthy. But only 29 members of this elite list are under 40 years old, with that exciting combination of money and youth.

Those 29 have a total of $119 billion between them. Ten come from the technology sector, including four from social networking giant Facebook. Eleven come from the United States, the rest from countries abroad. Five are newcomers to the billionaire ranks. Read the full list below.”

Facebook to Pay Zero Taxes, Will Receive $429 Million Tax Refund

” While Obama spends a lot of time talking about how the “rich” should pay their fair share, expect Obama to mention this minor incident… never. Fair share paying doesn’t apply to Obama supporters, whether in his cabinet or outside it. It never did.

It hasn’t drawn much attention, but Facebook’s first annual earnings report contains an accounting gem: a multibillion-dollar tax deduction for the cost of executive stock options and share awards.

Even though Facebook (FB) reported $1.1 billion in pre-tax profits from U.S. operations in 2012, it will probably pay zero federal and state taxes—and even receive a federal tax refund of about $429 million.”
