Families Against Mandatory Minimums, Not The NRA, Helped Craft Bill

Stand Your Ground States

” The viral content blog Gawker published an article Friday headlined: “The NRA Literally Wrote Florida’s New Bill to Legalize Warning Shots.” However, a brief investigation by the Free Beacon revealed that the NRA literally did not write Florida’s new bill to legalize warning shots.

The Florida legislature is considering expanding the state’s “stand your ground” law to encompass “threatened use of force.” Specifically, the bill is intended to shield those who brandish a gun or fire a warning shot in self-defense from the state’s 10-20-Life law, which imposes mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines for felony crimes involving a firearm.

Gawker reporter Adam Weinstein wrote Friday that Marion Hammer, a former NRA president and lobbyist for the Unified Sportsmen of Florida, was responsible for writing and pushing the bill.”

Boston Bombing Surprise: Officials Say Suspect Unarmed In Boat

” In yet another twist to the Boston marathon bombing, Associated Press reports that an official told them Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was unarmed when captured in a boat in a backyard. Dozens of reports had said he exchanged gunfire with police.

AP wrote that two officials told them Dzhokhar did not have a gun with him on the boat. This is surprising given the New York Times reported an M4 carbine and two handguns were found on the boat, that many news organizations reported the suspect exchanged rounds with officers and that other reports said his neck wound was self-inflicted. Further, Boston police and commissioner Ed Davies described a firefight taking place between the suspect and law enforcement”

Viewers Bash News Media For Bungled Boston Bomb Suspect Story

” Oops. TV networks and other media are red-faced after a tough day in the Boston bombing investigation.

Viewers unloaded on CNN after the cable network mistakenly reported Wednesday that a suspect was in custody. But the FBI and Boston police later said such reports were wrong. Online and on TV, CNN attempted to walk back its earlier reporting.

“CNN has now thrown it to a panel to discuss how the President should fix CNN,” Deadspin columnist Drew Magary sarcastically tweeted.

“CNN: the Twitter of cable news media,” tweeted @travisgster. “Only without the finely honed accuracy. #cnnfail#runcartoonsinstead.”

“Over the past day and a half, there have been a number of press reports based on information from unofficial sources that has been inaccurate,” the FBI wrote in a midday statement. “Since these stories often have unintended consequences, we ask the media, particularly at this early stage of the investigation, to exercise caution and attempt to verify information through appropriate official channels before reporting.”

But in the fray of a highly competitive story, that’s like begging the paparazzi to respect a celebrity’s privacy.”
