Turkson Wouldn’t Be First African Pope
” Yesterday morning a Lutheran friend sent me an email joking that he was “off Team Turkson” on account of Turkson campaigning for the job of pope. That would be Ghana’s Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson. Now, I realize just how unseemly it is for a churchman to campaign for any job but this may be an unfair reading of an interview Turkson gave in the Telegraph.
Some media outlet called The Week pretty much just recycled someone else’s work into their story headlined “Peter Turkson not shy about his wish to become first black Pope.”
CARDINAL Peter Turkson, the Ghanaian prelate who is hotly-tipped to become the next Pope, has given a candid interview about the “life-changing” responsibility of leading the Catholic Church.
I know of at least three African popes and I don’t believe I’ve heard anything about their skin color. I have heard that Victor I — the first African pope — was the first black pope but I don’t think that’s been proven. Apparently skin color is a more modern obsession. As for Miltiades and Gelasius I — and any other African popes — no reports on their skin color.”

Prior to the 16th Century there was no racial issues and the Africans/Blacks were accepted based upon their merit as people. For a while the vogue was for men of prominence to have a negro mistress or two, for some reason that was considered a status symbol. Maybe because they were different in color? They could not marry them but they got their jollies off with them. In fact, I believe that even today there appears to be fewer issues racially in Italy maybe because of their seafaring commerce depended on trade with the spice route and so forth.
In America, things were less liberal. The last State to give up Miscegenation Laws was forced into it in 1965, as it was agued that miscegenation laws violated the 13th Amendment of the US Constitution. Actually, the divide is more cultural than racial.
I got into a bind on my blog as a US Senator touting gun control (guess who?) also votes to give Israel financial and “other” support and aid from US tax payer coffers. In around 1974-1975 (?) there were gasoline rationing lines, no jobs, failed businesses and empty stores all over the place. I needed work, so I got in touch with friends and I was supposed to go to South Africa as a mercenary to help their government fight communism. I needed an Overseas Inoculation Card for the US Passport I was filing for. I had to write the US Department of State. They went nuts. I was told that if went, that I would be arrested when I got back to America and imprisoned. I needed work so I proceeded to get myself processed. State Dept., sent me two “warning” letters then made phone calls and someone made a visit to my home. They were nice. The reason for all of the commotion was because of the Apartheid Policy of South Africa was a violation of our US 13th Amendment. That was why no cars, military aid, money, nothing was given to their government. My answer was that I was not involved with race problems. I ended up being oppose to the point that I could not travel. Okay, hold that thought. Gun control support is from US Senate that always profusely showers and bestows UD Dollars on Israel. I don’t say anything because foreign aid is not my argument. Gun control, is a violation of the 2nd Amendment, and is my problem, as I see it.
Israel has miscegenation laws that forbid dating or marriage of Jew/Muslim, or Israeli/Arab, however you want to look at it. There are prison sentences for those that are convicted of breaking miscegenation law in Israel. That means the US Senate is continually violating the 13th Amendment of the US Constitution, and have no right to speak of gun control of any sort. The only support the US can give would be moral support, but not money or military, or commerce. I didn’t mind as long as the 2nd Amendment wasn’t an issue but when it became an issue they raised, then I brought up the miscegenation. And the “fan mail” rolled in… This might even raise your traffic onto this site. But that is the story.
I can only hope that if a black/negro/African, whatever title you want to give, ever does become Pontiff, that they will do a better job than the current occupant of the Oval Office has, in being good for anything other than creating strife. I don’t know what is in Turkson’s heart, so all I can say is, would a rose by any other name not smell as sweet? I wish him the best of luck. Also, the Roman Catholic Church unfortunately is not what it once was, or at least not in my experience. Maybe he can restore some degree of quality it once had, many years ago. That, would be nice.
Good evening , Brittius , You sound as though you’ve led quite the full life . I thoroughly enjoy your tales . the irony of this and the fact that we spoke of needing to close your comments is quite timely as just yesterday evening/ night I developed a less than appreciative few commenters calling me racist and various other niceties in the comments on the Dorner Manifesto .
The timing was great given our conversation of last night , but the thing is that they didn’t attack the post . No , they were up in arms about my background painting .
Apparently I’m a racist for objecting to a president(black or white) that tramples the Constitution .
Very funny that .
Quite obvious, the complainers and liberal gun control fruits have been educated far beyond their intelligence.
Regarding the complaints of others, there is a Latin phrase which states:
“Sermo datur cunctis; Animi sapientia paucis.”
Which reads: “Speech is given to many; Intelligence to few.”
I am rather fond of that background painting.
